Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Or as it’s known in the cereal community, “Unofficial But Pretty Much Official Lucky Charms Day!”

Because let’s be real here: if there were ever a thematically appropriate day to suck down leprechaun-endorsed oats and marshmallows by the beer stein-full, it’s St. Patrick’s Day.

As they always do, General Mills and Lucky Charms themselves have acknowledged the iconic cereal’s spiritual tie to this day of green by releasing an especially enviable Lucky Charms with Green Clovers! This cereal has been released before in a number of forms: 2017’s two-toned, minty fresh and earthen pine green shamrock marshmallows aren’t new, but previous years have also seen our four-leaved friends paired with sugary pots o’ gold and gold coins.

Who knows: maybe next year Lucky Charms will “Mix Up” these marshmallows like they did with the others, and we’ll finally get the black and neon pink marbits my edgy high school self always dreamt of.  Continue reading →

That’s it: I’m moving.

For most of my time running this blog, I’ve had to console my Canadian friends who can’t get any U.S.-exclusive cereals without enlisting an expensive flock of highly trained carrier pigeons to do their dirty work. But now? We’re only 2 months into 2017, and Canada has already got a Quebec-sized pile of delicious exclusives!

First they got arguably the world’s first banana bread-flavored cereal. Then they got the coolest Corn Flakes box you could possibly wake up to. And now they’ve got Lucky Charms Oatmeal and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeal. At this rate of awesomeness I bet they’ll have an ice cream sandwich-flavored Cap’n Crunch cereal by next week. And it’ll somehow involve Pokémon, too.

These new oatmeals, based off two of General Mills’s most popular cereals, mix squishy-licious instant oatmeal with either rainbow Lucky Charms marshmallows or a swirling auburn galaxy of crunchy Cinnamon Toast Crunch bits. Either way, you can’t go wrong—though I wonder if hot oatmeal would make Lucky’s marbits instantly melt into technicolor puddles. I hope these oatmeals sell well, because I want to see General Mills try Cookie Crisp Oatmeal and Reese’s Puffs Oatmeal next.

What hypothetical cereal–oatmeal combo would you love to munch the most?

There. If you were wondering whether Lucky Charms’s new Mixed-Up Marshmallows have wacky flavors, there’s your answer. I won’t blame you if you leave the site now and go read Joyce’s Ulysses, watch Chocolate Rain for the thousandth time, or do whatever else the hip young kids are doing these days.

But if you want to stay, I’ll provide my thrilling theory behind this new cereal and a thoughtful ranking of which new marshmallows are the coolest.

Cereal isn’t all about the sugary flakes and crunchy rings. It’s about the culture, too. Of course, since you’re reading a cereal blog, I probably don’t need to tell you that.

From the colorful characters to the mail-in premiums and games on the back of the box, there’s a good reason breakfast cereal has stood the test of time and become a full-on lifestyle for nostalgia-holics like me.

Growing up, my favorite part was always the TV commercials. Only on Saturday morning could you slurp down a bowl of Golden Grahams, binge watch Pokémon, then see a commercial about Toucan Sam’s deep sea adventures that makes you forget the Golden Grahams and inspires you tow your mother to the grocery store for a fresh box of Froot Loops that will fuel the exact same process the next weekend.

But as we grow older and start to substitute Cartoon Network with CNN and such, we see way fewer cereal commercials. I guess it’s hard to bookend Wolf Blitzer with Chip the Wolf.

That’s why I still purposely tune into Nickelodeon most mornings while I chomp down Raisin Bran Crunch or Cheerios. Aside from the sweet, sweet SpongeBob re-runs, I get to see that cereal commercials are still alive, well, and awesome.

Spooned & Spotted: Lucky Charms with Green Clovers & Gold Coins

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, or as it’s alternatively known, “Beer & Lucky Charms Day!” I can’t recommend mixing both together, but if you alternate swigs and spoonfuls, I won’t tell anyone.

What I can recommend is Lucky Charms’ Limited Edition Green Clover & Gold Coin Marshmallows cereal, specially released for this season of emerald and jade.

The name of the cereal says it all: instead of his usual rainbows, horseshoes, shooting stars, and more, Irish Timmy Turner Lucky has cut down his marshmallow menagerie to two holiday appropriate ones.

The good news is that these Lucky Charms come in both original and chocolate, so oat purists and chocoholics alike can both have a happy St. Patrick’s Day. The bad news is that the green marshmallows don’t have any special minty flavor or anything.

C’mon, Lucky! This was your chance to overthrow Shamrock Shakes for the title of “St. Paddy’s Day dessert of choice!” I have nothing against Shamrock Shakes, but I am still a little bitter that Uncle O’Grimacey isn’t around anymore. Continue reading →

News: Lucky Charms Wants You to Adopt a Leprechaun for St. Patrick’s Day

For Lucky Charms, St. Patrick’s Day is pretty much Christmas. Since the entire philosophical foundation of the cereal is “magically delicious marshmallows served with a smile by a cherubic leprechaun,” it’s no surprise that the brand is doing something special for March 17th’s upcoming day of green.

Sadly, my idea for a hybrid Lucky Charms/Shamrock Shake minty beverage has been ignored once more (that’s okay, my arteries weren’t ready anyway). Instead, The goofy looking cartoon Lucky is doing an appropriately silly social media campaign.

By visiting the Adopt a Leprechaun site and tweeting #AdoptALeprechaun at Lucky Charms’ Twitter account, you, too, can become the honorary stepfather, stepmother, or maybe even step-elf to one of many leprechauns.

In return, you get a biography of your leprechaun and the chance to print a button with Lucky’s grinning mug. I still can’t tell whether this new Lucky looks more like an Adventure Time character or a Fairly Oddparents character.

As for Cerealously, at the time of this writing our adoption request is still pending. But we’ll be sure to share on our Twitter when the lil lad or lass is named.

Lucky Charms isn’t the first cereal brand to offer a chance at adoption—Barbara’s Puffins have long featured a box label mail-in system for adopting endangered puffins, and we have two under our name.

If my knowledge about leprechaun biology is accurate, our soon-to-be leprechaun should be able to ride one of those puffins like the world’s most adorable Air Force pilot.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go buy a box of Lucky Charms, a Shamrock Shake, a blender, and a coffin for myself.

Review: Lucky Charms Marshmallows Only Cereal

Whether it’s an engagement ring, the One Ring to rule them all, or that darn videotape from The Ring, every so often an object enters your life and changes it forever.

For me, this object wasn’t a ring, but receiving it did make my mouth form into a perfectly round, gasping ring. That’s right: it’s a box of Marshmallows Only Lucky Charms. One of only 10 in existence.

Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca: S’Mores Crunch and Lucky Charms Marshmallows Only Cereal

I bet you’re hungry for s’more cereal video action!

Well gather round the faux campfire glow of your computer monitor (just don’t try to toast marshmallows over it) as we share with you the latest two videos from cereal sorcerer Gabe Fonseca. Gabe’s ongoing Cereal Time series has as much fun and nostalgia per 1 video serving size as the sugary cereals they detail.

And speaking of sorcerers, the first video we want to share is all about S’Mores Crunch cereal! This chocolate, graham, and marshmallow delight once had a mascot called the S’Morecerer, and that name is so cool that I’m dibs-ing it for if I ever become a vigilante superhero.

I would fight crime by night, skewering bad guys with marshmallow roasting pokers.

As Gabe concludes, those looking to relive the discontinued glory of S’Mores Crunch have two options: they can seek out Malt-O-Meal’s Madagascar S’Mores Jungle Party Cereal (which we reviewed here), or wait a little longer for the revival of Kellogg’s Smorz cereal, which should be arriving any day now (or so I hope!).
