Special: Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca — OJ’s Cereal

The latest video in the wonderful Cereal Time series, brought to you by cereal chieftain Gabe Fonseca details a forgotten gem from the days of cereal past (that sounds like a better name for an X-Men movie, now doesn’t it?).

It’s OJ’s cereal, one of few cereals with a distinct orange flavoring. Perhaps this flavor oddity is what made it disappear from store shelves. To quote Hunter S. Thompson, it was “too weird to live, too rare to die,” which is why it will survive in the memory of fans everywhere.

What cereal will Gabe cover next? Feel free to post a comment below with your favorite retro cereal while you wait to find out. And in the mean time, you can check out Gabe’s other videos here.

Personally, we here at Cerealously are hoping for a look back at PB&J cereal, a cereal so mythic and rare (it never reached mass market), it is only discussed by cereal historians in hushed tones and nervous whispers.

Review: Froot Loops Letters Fruit Snacks

IMG_3654Kellogg’s has some big, squishy shoes to fill.

By putting the Froot Loops name on a new fruit snacks product, as well as the friendly visage of Toucan Sam himself, Kellogg’s better be ready for comparisons to be drawn between the snacks and Froot Loops cereal itself (after all, that’s the only reason we’re featuring these!).

Even more important, though, is that Froot Loops Letters are also going to be compared to Kellogg’s other fruit snacks. Oh yeah, you know which ones I mean. Continue reading

Special: Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca — Rice Krispies Treats Cereal

Wake up, breakfast lovers: it’s cereal time!

Gabe Fonseca is a friend of Cerealously and a fellow connoisseur of cereals new and old. You may even recognize his passion for the topic from his legendary cereal box wall project (have you ever seen something so beautiful?).

We’d love to share with you the latest in Gabe’s ongoing YouTube series detailing cereal favorites from across the expanse of time. These Cereal Time videos are a heaping bowlful of history, nostalgia, humor, and, of course, a lot of sweet, delicious sugar.

This week’s video is a real “treat” for fans of hard-to-find cereals. If you enjoy it, be sure to watch Gabe’s other videos, and give him a follow on Twitter, as well.

So pour yourself some Rice Krispies, grab a cozy blanket, and stay awhile. Because once you Snap, Crackle, and Pop, you won’t be able to stop.

Review: Frosted Flakes with Energy Clusters Cereal

IMG_3621What would Tony the Tiger say about the new Frosted Flakes with Energy Clusters from Kellogg’s? And I mean the real, Thurl Ravenscroft-voiced Tony the Tiger, not the meme-spouting CGI self-parody he has become. My guess is something along the lines of:

“They’re GRRRRanulated indictments of the 21st century zeitgeist’s perplexing infatuation with ‘health-ifying’ every facet of their day, despite the tendency of producers to use puffery and buzzwords to beguile and mislead!”

Or maybe he’d just say they’re great. Tomato, to-mah-toe, right? Continue reading

Review: Corn Pops Cereal (American vs. Canadian)

But this is Cerealously, not “Catching Up with Ketchup,” so let’s talk about what really matters.

I was lucky enough to spend this past week on vacation with my family that has become a loving American-Canadian hybrid. What this meant was that the pantry shelves were packed tight with snacks of both origins, a union which I viewed as an edible symbol of our countries’ goodwill. I mean, is there anything more beautiful than learning French as you eat?

Bilingualism: it’s what’s for breakfast. Continue reading

Special: Cerealously Visits the 2015 Cereal City Festival

d890a5_b37124a43fe047dc8ef967eea37a8844.jpg_srb_p_363_274_75_22_0.50_1.20_0It was a damp and cloudy Saturday morning. It was that sad type of weather where the clouds are eternally on the cusp of raining, yet it never comes. Essentially, it was the weather equivalent of that “I feel like I’m about to sneeze, but this potential sneeze prefers to tease” experience. In short, it was a far cry from the sunny and pristine childhood Saturdays you typically associate with cereal.

But I wasn’t about to let that dampen my mood, as well. Because it was 6:30am, and it was time to get driving. Why? Because it was the day of the 2015 Cereal City Festival, of course! Hosted every summer by Kellogg’s and Post in their shared city headquarters of Battle Creek, Michigan, the festival is an all-you-can-eat extravaganza celebrating the food which we all love, and which Battle Creek is built on (you can’t prove to me that the soil isn’t Cocoa Pebble dust). Somewhere in Minnesota, General Mills watches with jealousy. Continue reading

Review: Raisin Bran Crunch Cereal

Picture it: you angrily punch the alarm clock and groan loudly to the heavens above your bleary, slowly focusing eyes.

It’s Monday again, so you try to channel your inner Garfield and muster up some sarcastic quip, but the lingering sleepies in your eyes prevent any coherent thought. Oh well, so much for the orange cat. At least you do have leftover lasagna for lunch. Or is it linguini?

Hey! Enough dawdling! You have to go to work!

You stumble and bumble through your morning routine (Pants on right-side-out? Check. Sickeningly black coffee brewing? Check.), even though your mind is still in last night’s dream with Carmen Electra and that piñata in a jacuzzi. If you’re gonna make it through Johnson’s 9am “productivity jamboree,” you’re gonna need something wholesome, yet satisfying for breakfast.

So you tear open the pantry like Chewbacca tears off arms, and you see the sun smiling back at you. No, not that flaming hot, helium-loving ball in the sky: this is a good sun. The one proudly hoisting twin scoops on your familiar purple box of Raisin Bran Crunch. Continue reading
