It’s mid-April, and the last traces of winter are finally melting away. This means that summer, s’mores, subsequent spooky stories, and other things that start with “s” are on their way. So right after I track down that lying groundhog who predicted an early spring, I’m going to load up on graham crackers, chocolate bars, marshmallows, and first aid kits for inevitable 3rd degree burns caused by charred marshmallow magma.
But before I start up any campfires and make Smokey the Bear sweat nervously, I have to pre-game with as many s’mores favored snacks as possible. Last week I munched on the dreamy pillows of Krave S’Mores, so now it’s Golden Grahams’ turn.
Ordinarily, I could just add Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms marbits to a bowl of Golden Grahams and call it a day. But it’s an on-the-go kind of busy week, and I can’t carry around a portable torch to roast any marshmallows (I don’t have any angry mobs scheduled). Luckily, General Mills has me covered with Golden Grahams S’Mores Treats.
Will they be satisfying enough to make me postpone that angry mob appointment indefinitely? Enough fluff, let’s get right into the marshmallow fluff!
Do you ever feel lonely snapping pics and snacking on Kix with your Selfie Spoon?
Do you feel your friendships would be stronger if your faces were all smushed uncomfortably close together?
Do you have a need for hashtags at the breakfast table, because hash browns alone just aren’t cutting it?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then Cinnamon Toast Crunch has you covered. After the success of the Selfie Spoon, CTC has introduced their latest invention: #squadbowls. These interconnected cereal bowls are perfect for cereal parties and breakfast clubs, and they’d probably make great skate parks for all your Tech Deck Dudes, too.
You can buy them at squadbowls.com. Depending on how popular you are, they come in 3, 4, 5, and 6 person sizes. But you’ll have to act quickly: the first 10 bowls each day (starting at 10am EST each day from now until 4/17) are only $0.99. After that, even the cheapest #squadbowl will run you back a whopping $59.99.
At that rate, you’ll be filling the bowls with Malt-O-Meal, for sure.
It goes without saying that our fast fingers here at Cerealously already snapped up one of the first 10 bowls. Expect an in-depth look as soon as it arrives.
Now does anyone know where I can buy some friends?
UPDATE (June 6th, 2016): Read my review of both Tiny Toast cereals by clicking here!)
Could Tiny Toast Cereal be the best cereal since sliced bread?
It might be too soon to say (after all, sliced bread has been the best thing since 1928), but what we do know is that Tiny Toast cereal, a crunchy bread-shaped cereal that comes in Strawberry and Blueberry, is flavored with real fruit ingredients, has no artificial colors or high fructose corn syrup, and is General Mills’ first new cereal brand in 15+ years. It’s the first since General Mills’ short-lived Harmony cereal, so here’s hoping Tiny Toast sticks it out longer than a piece of French toast thrown at the ceiling.
I’m just as blindsided and intrigued by this news as you are, cereal fans. Cerealously first found out about Tiny Toast way back in April, thanks to this cryptic Instagram post by Chef Andrew Zimmern.
As the ever-vigilant cereal historian Gabe Fonseca points out, General Mills has experimented with sweet bread-themed cereals in the past. Though the pictured Tiny Toasts cereals never reached shelves, it looks like Strawberry Tiny Toast will be very real, very soon.
All predictions and history aside, I’m excited: strawberry jelly on toast has been a breakfast mainstay in my family for decades, ever since my dad would prepare and eat entire loafs of it—assembly line style—to kill time after school.
Okay, just one more prediction: will Grape Tiny Toast be next? How about Cinnamon Raisin Tiny Toast? Ooh, or maybe Grilled Cheese Tiny Toast? Marble Rye Reuben Tiny Toast?
Quick: does the word “bran” fill you with a sense of fear, loathing, and disgust? If you answered “yes,” then you might be one of the many anti-branners out there who spurns cereals like Bran Flakes and Raisin Bran for being bland and boring.
As seen in the cereal’s first advertising campaign, Cracklin’ Oat Bran was made for such bran banners back in 1977. This is just one of the interesting historical factoids you can expect from cereal ninja Gabe Fonseca, who has two new episodes in his fun and informational Cereal Time YouTube series that we’d like to share with you.
There’s only one thing more addicting than watching Cereal Time, and that’s popping squares of Cracklin’ Oat Bran into your mouth like Macklemore pops tags (that’s the most modern reference I’ll make on this site, so enjoy it). That’s why it’s so appropriate that Cereal Time finally has an episode dedicated to these uniquely shaped and textured oat squares. Continue reading →
That’s right, General Mills’ new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles joins the proud lineage of cereals shaped like grinning faces, which includes Kaboom, Cabbage Patch Kids Cereal, and even another Canada-exclusive TMNT cereal from back in the day.
There’s something about carnivorously devouring cereal smileys that’s sadistically satisfying. It’s probably the fact that these faces tend to be nightmarishly creepy, so pulverizing them with a molar guillotine feels like I’m doing the world a service.
General Mills surprisingly dropped this TMNT cereal on shelves without any announcement, like a heroes in a half-shell bombshell. I’m not upset, though: walking into the supermarket and seeing this cereal was like finding a prize at the bottom of a cereal box…except in this case the box was the prize.
That sentence made no sense, so let’s just dive—or maybe ninja flip—right into the review.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, or as it’s alternatively known, “Beer & Lucky Charms Day!” I can’t recommend mixing both together, but if you alternate swigs and spoonfuls, I won’t tell anyone.
What I can recommend is Lucky Charms’ Limited Edition Green Clover & Gold Coin Marshmallows cereal, specially released for this season of emerald and jade.
The name of the cereal says it all: instead of his usual rainbows, horseshoes, shooting stars, and more, Irish Timmy Turner Lucky has cut down his marshmallow menagerie to two holiday appropriate ones.
The good news is that these Lucky Charms come in both original and chocolate, so oat purists and chocoholics alike can both have a happy St. Patrick’s Day. The bad news is that the green marshmallows don’t have any special minty flavor or anything.
C’mon, Lucky! This was your chance to overthrow Shamrock Shakes for the title of “St. Paddy’s Day dessert of choice!” I have nothing against Shamrock Shakes, but I am still a little bitter that Uncle O’Grimacey isn’t around anymore. Continue reading →
For Lucky Charms, St. Patrick’s Day is pretty much Christmas. Since the entire philosophical foundation of the cereal is “magically delicious marshmallows served with a smile by a cherubic leprechaun,” it’s no surprise that the brand is doing something special for March 17th’s upcoming day of green.
Sadly, my idea for a hybrid Lucky Charms/Shamrock Shake minty beverage has been ignored once more (that’s okay, my arteries weren’t ready anyway). Instead, The goofy looking cartoon Lucky is doing an appropriately silly social media campaign.
By visiting the Adopt a Leprechaun site and tweeting #AdoptALeprechaun at Lucky Charms’ Twitter account, you, too, can become the honorary stepfather, stepmother, or maybe even step-elf to one of many leprechauns.
In return, you get a biography of your leprechaun and the chance to print a button with Lucky’s grinning mug. I still can’t tell whether this new Lucky looks more like an Adventure Time character or a Fairly Oddparents character.
As for Cerealously, at the time of this writing our adoption request is still pending. But we’ll be sure to share on our Twitter when the lil lad or lass is named.
Lucky Charms isn’t the first cereal brand to offer a chance at adoption—Barbara’s Puffins have long featured a box label mail-in system for adopting endangered puffins, and we have two under our name.
If my knowledge about leprechaun biology is accurate, our soon-to-be leprechaun should be able to ride one of those puffins like the world’s most adorable Air Force pilot.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go buy a box of Lucky Charms, a Shamrock Shake, a blender, and a coffin for myself.
That’s right, fellow cerealists, the greatest day of the year has come once more! March 7th is National Cereal Day, and it’s better than 25 Christmases stuffed into a Thanksgiving turkey that’s been strapped to a 4th of July firework and launched into a jack-o-lantern carved to look like the Easter bunny.
Today, cereal munchers everywhere are paying loving tribute to the fun, delicious, and ever-nostalgic breakfast classic that faithfully serves us 365 days a year (or 366, on years like this one).
Since Cerealously was only born in July of 2015, this is our first National Cereal Day as a blog. Despite this, I want to do a brief throwback to National Cereal Day 2015, when General Mills sent a few lucky cereal fans this rockin’ jigsaw puzzle that is way too cool not to share with the Internet.
I will say, though, that even though this jigsaw puzzle is cool, it was difficult enough to put together that Jigsaw from Saw must have been the one who designed it. If you can imagine a slightly sweaty grown man hunched over and swearing while trying to fit a Lucky Charms horseshoe piece into a Cheerio-shaped hole, you wouldn’t be far from the truth.
In reality, I was much sweatier.
This year, General Mills teamed up with the Food Network’s Justin Warner to develop a bunch of exclusive cereal recipes. I’d love to make one, like the above Trix Sunrise Chill Pie, but we all know that my “baking session” would end 10 minutes later with me passed out on the kitchen floor, face down in a puddle of milk with a half-eaten box of Trix spilled around me like fruity crime scene giblets. You can check out this and other recipes here.
Meanwhile, no National Cereal Day would be complete without a contribution from Gabe Fonseca, a friend of Cerealously and a binge watchable cereal YouTuber. Gabe made this awesome tribute video for his channel, which features a whole bunch of cool people sharing their favorite cereals. Look closely, and you might even catch yours truly in the video.
Just don’t blame me if my face makes you go blind.
But Gabe isn’t the only one who’s ever asked me what my favorite cereal is. In fact, I get asked it so often, that I wanted to properly celebrate National Cereal Day here on Cerealously by counting down not 1, not 5, and not even 8.125 of my favorite cereals. No, it’s time to rank my Top 10 Cereals of All Time!* Continue reading →
