Super Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca!

Player 1, please press start. Because we’ve got a heck of a cereal adventure ahead of us.

But I’m not talking about Chex Quest—though I always wish that I am. No, I just want to share the latest videos from cereal high scorer Gabe Fonseca’s Cereal Time YouTube series. On every episode of Cereal Time, Gabe dives into his personal breakfast archives to share the history and continued legacy of cereals both famous and obscure.

And this time, he’s pulling an arcade cabinet classic out of his cereal cabinet.

The first video we’re sharing is about Pac-Man Cereal! There’s something so magical about video game cereals (it’s actually a topic I had the chance to write about recently!). Whether it’s the way they infuse neon-tinged nostalgia into every piece or the way their sugary taste pairs perfectly with secret late night gaming sessions—don’t crunch too loud, or Mom will hear—video game cereals are like distilled geometric bits of pure childhood. Four More from “Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca!”

Need something to Brite-n your day? Okay, do you need four things to brighten your day after that terrible pun?

Well you’re in luck, because there are four new episodes in cereal archivist Gabe Fonseca’s Cereal Time YouTube series. Longtime Cereal Time binge watchers know the drill, but I’ll catch everyone else up to speed on this series in one sentence:

One man spotlights one cereal every one week to produce three-to-four fun-filled minutes of breakfast nostalgia.

Intrigued? Let’s start somewhere over the rainbow with Gabe’s episode on Rainbow Brite Cereal. As he states in the video, this 1985 cereal was a tie-in with Rainbow Brite’s animated feature film, and it features a literal rainbow of fruity and crunchy…shapes?

The more logical would see them as Rainbow Brite’s hair curls or shirt sleeves, but I prefer to call them “Macaroni & cheese mixed with the colorful grubs Timon and Pumbaa eat in The Lion King.” Continue reading

Review: General Mills Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios

General Mills Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Box

Like Michael Meyers or Freddy Krueger, the taste of Halloween is already quietly creeping onto store shelves. But unlike Mike or Fred, pumpkin spice wants to please your taste buds instead of leaving them severed and bloody on the kitchen floor.

After all, pumpkin spice is addicting, and that’s why we keep inviting it back into our homes like dimwitted stock characters in a vampire movie. So whether you’re a pumpkin spice nut or a frustrated recoverer of “pumpkin spice fatigue,” please forgive me for disrupting your hot dogs ‘n’ lemonade days of August with General Mills’ new Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Cheerios.  Continue reading

Three of the Best Cereal Commercials on TV Now

Three of the Best Cereal Commercials Header

Cereal isn’t all about the sugary flakes and crunchy rings. It’s about the culture, too. Of course, since you’re reading a cereal blog, I probably don’t need to tell you that.

From the colorful characters to the mail-in premiums and games on the back of the box, there’s a good reason breakfast cereal has stood the test of time and become a full-on lifestyle for nostalgia-holics like me.

Growing up, my favorite part was always the TV commercials. Only on Saturday morning could you slurp down a bowl of Golden Grahams, binge watch Pokémon, then see a commercial about Toucan Sam’s deep sea adventures that makes you forget the Golden Grahams and inspires you tow your mother to the grocery store for a fresh box of Froot Loops that will fuel the exact same process the next weekend.

But as we grow older and start to substitute Cartoon Network with CNN and such, we see way fewer cereal commercials. I guess it’s hard to bookend Wolf Blitzer with Chip the Wolf.

That’s why I still purposely tune into Nickelodeon most mornings while I chomp down Raisin Bran Crunch or Cheerios. Aside from the sweet, sweet SpongeBob re-runs, I get to see that cereal commercials are still alive, well, and awesome.

Here are three of the best. Continue reading

Review: Limited Edition Strawberry Cheerios

IMG_4682

Strawberries.

Forget April showers, May flowers, and June TV re-runs of Austin Powers, because strawberries are the real harbingers of summertime.

Strawberries!

Whether it’s the rosy pink of an artificial strawberry or the screaming scarlet of the real thing, the color of strawberry related things is enough to make my blood run red. Oh, wait…it always does that.

Strawberries!

Even saying the name makes me want to suck down fruity beverages through a curly plastic tube while singing along to “Copacabana,” because nothing’s better than straws and Barry.

Now even Cheerios—one of the most iconic cereal brands out there—has embraced this hero of the season. With gluten-free Limited Edition Strawberry Cheerios, General Mills is once again bringing peace to the breakfast aisle after the tragic discontinuation of Strawberry Yogurt Burst Cheerios in 2013.

We also know that the bread and strawberry butter of General Mills’ strawberry cereal game is still to come with this summer’s Strawberry Tiny Toast, but let’s give Strawberry Cheerios their time in the oat ring-shaped spotlight. Hi ho, Cheerio: let’s-a go!

News: Pumpkin Spice Cheerios Coming This Fall!

(Update: I reviewed Pumpkin Spice Cheerios!)

This is not a drill! Red alert! Err…I mean…orange alert!

As part of their ongoing efforts to revitalize the Cheerios brand, General Mills just announced an autumn debut for Pumpkin Spice Cheerios.

Set to hit stores around Labor Day, Pumpkin Spice Cheerios will bring an iconic seasonal flavor—which has already hit lattes, toaster pastries, dish soap, and much more—to your breakfast bowl. Since General Mills is committed to removing artificial flavors from its cereals, I’m willing to bet that this cereal will be stuffed with real pumpkin, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and hopefully fan favorites cloves and allspice.

Of course, Pumpkin Spice Cheerios won’t be the first pumpkin cereal: Trader Joe’s Pumpkin O’s, Pumpkin Puffins, and Pumpkin Spice Frosted Mini-Wheats have already broken that farm-fresh ground. But since those three cereals are cinnamon-y, squash-y, and pumpkin pie-y (in that order), Pumpkin Spice Cheerios could still easily claim the title of most authentically spicy pumpkin spice cereal,

Between Pumpkin Spice and this summer’s Strawberry Cheerios, I’m excited for the “revival” of a cereal line that I never really considered to be “dying” to begin with.

Keep up the good work, Cheerios: as long as you’re around, I can get my O-shaped breakfast food fix without having to pour milk on my SpaghettiOs.

Cereal Time with Gabe Fonseca: Honey Nut Cheerios with Florida Honey and Olympics Cereals

Are you hungry to unwrap a couple early Christmas presents? Well look no further than the latest two entries we want to share from modern day cereal Santa Claus Gabe Fonseca’s (by “cereal Santa Claus, I mean in terms of giving great gifts, not in terms of appearance, of course 😉) Cereal Time YouTube series. Cereal Time provides a list of nostalgic and fun cereal tribute videos that’s longer than Santa’s naughty list after Happy Hour.

The first video to share is about a very special box of Honey Nut Cheerios. And no, I don’t mean that lucky box of Cheerios that you ate for breakfast on the same morning you won $500 on a scratch off ticket.

I’m sure that video’s coming later.

No, this rare box of HNC was made with genuine Florida honey and was released as a tie-in with a recent campaign in which General Mills made a “living billboard” filled with bees (sounds like the start of a bad Nicolas Cage horror movie). These boxes were given out to a select few lucky recipients, including Gabe. You’ll have to watch to see what he thinks of this now mythic, one of a kind honey talisman!

Oh, and guess who’s still unhappily buzzing about not getting a box? Continue reading

Special: Ranking General Mills’ Star Wars Cereal Boxes!

IMG_4142

Ready your bowls, cereal Jedis!

Here at Cerealously, it’s our goal to represent the entire diverse spectrum of the cereal galaxy. So straight off of our review of a Kashi cereal, it’s time to go to Kashyyyk, as we take a more in-depth look at the Star Wars mash-up cereal boxes offered by General Mills to promote the upcoming release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The boxes combine classic Star Wars images with the cereal characters you know and love, squeezing the two universes tighter together than a Death Star trash compactor.

And yes, I know, this is the third time I’ve mentioned them, but if you can Force yourself through one last post, I promise I’ll put my awakened fanboy-ism back to sleep. Because this time I’m going to rank them from worst to best on a carefully developed scale of “Jar Jar Binks to Emperor’s Royal Guard.”

Come on, you can’t tell me those cloaked red dudes aren’t the most badass characters in the Lucas-verse.

My midichlorian count must be pretty high lately (I have been consuming a lot of midi-calories from all this cereal), because General Mills’ PR team was generous enough to send me a care package of these cereals. And it was done at warp speed, too! Whoever their delivery guy is, he could probably beat Han in the Kessel Run. So without further adieu, let’s count ’em down! Continue reading
