Spooned & Spotted (Canada): Limited Edition Maple Cheerios Cereal

maple-cheerios-box

Ever wonder what would happen if a French Toast Crunch bread slice decided it wanted to be a doughnut instead?

Well wonder no longer: assuming you have a passport or Canadian citizenship. Because Maple Cheerios—baffling stylized as Cheerios Maple—has quietly dripped onto Canadian shelves as smoothly as syrup through a spigot. It’s a Special Edition flavor released to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, so stuff the waffle iron back in the pantry and enjoy a cake pan’s worth of this pancake-flavored stuff while you can. I know I’m going to do whatever it takes to get my sticky, Waffle Crisp-stained mitts on a box, whether that means negotiating, migrating, or mutating into a man-moose hybrid.

And speaking of Waffle Crisp, I have high hopes that these Cheerios will taste more authentically maple-y, since they are flavored with real maple syrup. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be stuffing flapjacks with these crunchy syrup circles in no time.

Massive thanks to our friends at Junk Food Canada for sharing the photo above. Maple Cheerios may not be as interesting as Birthday Cake Froot Loops, which are also hitting Canadian breakfast aisles as we speak, but hey: most of my birthday cakes involve maple syrup anyway.

(Most of my birthday cakes are pancakes.)

Why Is Honey Nut Cheerios America’s Best-Selling Cereal? | Infographic

For an impressive 8 (picture two Cheerios stacked on top of each other) years now, Honey Nut Cheerios has been named the best-selling cereal in America.

I would call this unbelievable, but after growing up with a father who exported enough empty Honey Nut Cheerios boxes from our household to build a cardboard replica of the entire Bee Movie set, I’ve experienced first-hand the zealous loyalty this hive-minded cereal can inspire.

But just why does this cereal keep breakfast lovers buzzing nearly 40 years after its introduction? After all, there are other cereals that are sweeter, healthier, or more chocolate chip cookie-shaped. I’ve always wanted to mix some investigative journalism into this blog’s normal stew of reviews and news, so I did some research, flexed my puny graphical muscles, and made an infographic. Click to see it in its full glory:

Why Honey Nut Cheerios is America's Best-Selling Cereal

Are you a true Honey Nut Cheerios bee-liever too? Let me know below just what attracts you to these irresistibly golden-glazed rings. Maybe you and my dad can start a fan club.

Review: Honey Nut Cheerios Granola Snack

Honey Nut Cheerios Granola Snack Cereal Pouch

Have you ever been eating Honey Nut Cheerios in one hand and Pop Rocks in the other and thought, “Gee, I really wish someone would combine the best of these two completely different foods. That way I could have a free hand for high-fiving strangers, wrangling rattlesnakes, and writing obtusely obscure hypotheticals into online cereal reviews?”

Well think no more and start mindlessly munching, because General Mills’s new Honey Nut Cheerios Granola Snack is about to make your obtuse problem feel a lot more right.

And yes: that was a geometry joke. Continue reading

Spooned & Spotted: General Mills DC Comic Superhero Boxes!

General Mills Batman Honey Nut Cheerios Box

Sweet, syrupy honey, Batman! I didn’t know you could actually fly! But where’d your fifth finger go—and how’d you fit your spandex over that stinger?

That’s right: Bruce Wayne meets whole grain on General Mills’s latest limited edition Honey Nut Cheerios box. The box features Buzz the Bee as Batman, and it includes one of four collectible DC comic books inside. I was going to make a “Bee-tman” pun, but I’m betting Beetman is already the mascot of some obscure organic dehydrated beet chips brand.

Unfortunately*, the Honey Nut Cheerios inside are unchanged. Sorry if I got your hopes up for Chocolate Strawberry Cheerios, for a second. But despite this box’s flavor consistency, I still think it’s a neat collector’s piece. This isn’t the first time General Mills has teamed up with comic book artists to make special boxes, as they did the same thing for 2014’s Monster Cereals.

Here’s hoping they do a line of Alan Moore-themed boxes next. I’d love to see the Trix Rabbit as Rorschach and and Sonny the Cuckoo in a Guy Fawkes mask.

But speaking of other mascots, Buzz wasn’t the only cereal mascot to get a DC Comic makeover. Our friend Jason at Collecting Candy found Lucky channeling his inner Green Lantern:

Apparently the miniature comic books come in boxes of Trix, Cocoa Puffs, and Multi-Grain Cheerios, too, so we might get to see our favorite zoological mascots play dress up after all. Though I’m not sure what mascot-less Multi-Grain Cheerios would dress up as.

Think they can Photoshop Aquaman into a bowl of Cheerio-filled milk?

If you spot the other boxes in this series, or if you’ve just got a heroic cereal photo of your own to share (I found the Cheerios at Meijer), feel free to pass it along on our submissions page, or just email us at cerealously.net@gmail.com. There’s a good chance your picture could be featured on the site.

Cerealously’s Top 5 New Cereals of 2016!

Cerealously's Top 5 New Cereals for 2016

Hold it right there, 2016: you may be a largely hated year, but I’m not letting you leave just yet.

No year is complete without a year in review list. And while many people prefer to detail the most buzz-worthy news stories, the “earwormiest” chart-toppers, or the funniest videos featuring frisky and/or fiendish felines, I’m just going to tell you what believe were the 5 best new cereals this year. So if you have time between your New Year’s cheers to read about pink Cheerios, this list is for you.

While taste is definitely a defining factor in my rankings, keep in mind that innovation, packaging, and nostalgic whimsy will all be taken into account, too. 2015’s winner, JIF PB&J Cereal, swept the vote based on elementary school lunchtime memories alone—even though it did taste pretty darn good, too.

So without further ado, let’s count down as the ball—or should I say bowl—drops. Continue reading

Review: Very Berry Cheerios Cereal Flavored with Real Fruit

General Mills Very Berry Cheerios Box

I hope you all had a legendary and merry December, because it’s time to carry that spirit into an extraordinary January full of Very Berry Cheerios!

If you can’t tell, I’m getting a head start on my New Year’s Resolution: “make more annoying rhymes.”

While Very Berry is far from the first fruity Cheerios variety to hit shelves, this cereal takes the shortcake when it comes to sheer quantity of berries. Flavored with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries, the only thing missing from Very Berry Cheerios is a bushel of Wonka’s snozzberries.

But I think the wallpaper industry still has exclusive rights to America’s annual snozzberry harvests, so I’ll forgive General Mills for stopping at four berries. This has been a fruitful year for them, after all: from Berry Bunnies and newly reformulated Trix to two varieties of Tiny Toast, ol’ GM has had its fair share of juicy 2016 scoops.

Will Very Berry Cheerios be a worthy closer for this year of naturally flavored, artificial color-free berry cereals? There’s only one way to find out, and spoiler alertit involves stuffing my annoying rhyme-hole with purple oat rings. Continue reading

(Update: We reviewed Very Berry Cheerios!)

This ain’t Cheerios’s first time ’round the berry block.

In fact, it isn’t even their third, fourth, or, fifth. On this teetering cusp of 2016–2017, General Mills new Very Berry Cheerios has hit shelves, and it’s the sixth berry-flavored (arguably the seventh) Cheerios to every grace America’s fruit-loving taste buds. Let’s count ’em off, kids: buckle your seatbelts and grab those lottery numbers, because we’re going back 13 years in time. Continue reading

Spooned & Spotted (Canada): General Mills Star Wars Boxes & Post Football Boxes

Canadian Star Wars Cheerios Box Darth Vader

“Hut, hut…Jabba the Hutt, hike!”

While America’s northern neighbors may not get a lot of the exclusive flavors we get in the States (I’m dedicating my Orange CreamPop Crunch box to you, Canada), they sure do get a lot of cool cereal package designs.

Take these bold Star Wars Cheerios boxes—presumably released in anticipation of this winter’s Rogue One—for example. While in the U.S., we merely got General Mills Mascots redesigned in Star Wars garb for The Force Awakens, Canadian breakfasters get to make eye contact with Darth Vader himself.

Canadian Star Wars Cheerios Box Stormtrooper

Now I just want to see Buzz the Bee face off against the Sith Lord. While my money’s on Anakin, Buzz’s wings do give him the higher ground.

But it isn’t just lightsabers that’ll be gracing Canadian kitchen tables. They get linebackers, too. Continue reading
