It’s mid-April, and the last traces of winter are finally melting away. This means that summer, s’mores, subsequent spooky stories, and other things that start with “s” are on their way. So right after I track down that lying groundhog who predicted an early spring, I’m going to load up on graham crackers, chocolate bars, marshmallows, and first aid kits for inevitable 3rd degree burns caused by charred marshmallow magma.
But before I start up any campfires and make Smokey the Bear sweat nervously, I have to pre-game with as many s’mores favored snacks as possible. Last week I munched on the dreamy pillows of Krave S’Mores, so now it’s Golden Grahams’ turn.
Ordinarily, I could just add Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms marbits to a bowl of Golden Grahams and call it a day. But it’s an on-the-go kind of busy week, and I can’t carry around a portable torch to roast any marshmallows (I don’t have any angry mobs scheduled). Luckily, General Mills has me covered with Golden Grahams S’Mores Treats.
Will they be satisfying enough to make me postpone that angry mob appointment indefinitely? Enough fluff, let’s get right into the marshmallow fluff!
In appropriate s’mores fashion, these bars are super sticky. For maximum portability, you could easily stick one to the back of your neck or calf. The stickiness comes less from the marshmallows and more from the glistening sugar sheen on the Golden Grahams pieces.
These half-crushed and gobbed together cereal pieces have a nice gritty crispiness, all the baked-in honey graham cracker flavor you know and love from Golden Grahams, and a bonus burst of syrupy sweetness from the translucent glaze.
The chocolate (both in the base and scattered within the bar) is decidedly un-s’mores like: it’s super milky and sweet with little genuine cocoa complexity. I can mostly forgive it, though, because it’s that kind of perfectly-textured granola bar chocolate that sort of melts away the second your teeth touch it.
You know: kind of like this.
When it comes to s’mores, I’m a marshmallow minimalist. I prefer to let the graham and chocolate do the heavy lifting, which is probably why Milk Chocolate Graham is my all-time favorite Pop-Tart.
That’s why I’m happy to report that the marshmallows in these Golden Grahams Treats provide a very subtle flavor and little more. Their faint vanilla bursts mix well with the cereal pieces’ toastiness to create a “roasted marshmallow” aftertaste. But mostly, the marshmallows just act as gooey binding agents to keep the Golden Grahams from divorcing their chocolate lovers.
Altogether, Golden Grahams S’Mores Treats don’t make for a very authentic s’mores snack. If you want to eat s’mores on the s’move, you’re better off heading to Canada, which is the only place they still sell Ritz Bits S’Mores.
You all knew I had to mention Ritz Bits eventually.
But the Treats do make rather tasty chocolate graham snacks, loaded with golden brown sugar goodness. For lovers of Golden Grahams (like me) who have long hoped that GG would get the Cinnamon Toast Crunch treatment with an expanded line of flavors, these cereal bars are the next best thing.
Now seriously: where can I sign a petition for Gingerbread Golden Grahams?
The “Bowl:” Golden Grahams S’Mores Treats
The Breakdown: Sticky sweet graham and overly processed chocolate makes for a cereal bar that’s only a distant relative of a real s’more, but still a loved member of the honey graham family regardless.
The Bottom Line: 8 groundhog vendettas out of 10

OMG!
It’s completely off topic, but seeing you and adam talking about Golden Grahams like they are THE toasted square-shaped cereal makes me so happy!
Why? ’cause Nestle just announced they bring Golden Minis to Germany. Which means, despite the name i will finally be able to eat Golden Grahams!!!!
I’m soooo looking forward to it! ^^
I’ve always loved cereal-based bars. These are some of the best, along with the Double Chocolate Chex Bars. Getting the over-sized versions that they sell in c-stores is even better.
Golden Grahams is one of those cereals which is just solid. I mean like consistent. Maybe that’s why Kelloggs and Post have never attempted to make knock-offs: because everyone knows they can’t match that glorious crunch and sweet glaze of the yellow box.
Yep, you hit the nail on the head. I consider Golden Grahams like the Huy Fong Sriracha Sauce of cereals: it’s so iconic and reputable that it doesn’t need wacky varieties, mascots, or even much advertising anymore.
