Finally, finally: a licensed cereal willing to do at least the very bare minimum to relevantly connect its composition to the property it’s promoting. I mean, a Sonic the Hedgehog cereal…shaped like golden rings! Not since Buddy the Elf’s syrup-slathered slop have we seen such a thoughtful not entirely thoughtless movie cereal.
Sure, a cereal based on the Blue Blur could’ve gone for a slightly more inspired flavor—blue raspberry and cherry Sonic Popsicle flavored clusters, anyone?—but at least honey-flavored rings are better than some bland birthday cake or vapid vanilla. And sure, the marbits could be shaped a little more lovingly—the green Chaos Emeralds I get, while the blue ones “representing Sonic swirling around” are a little iffy—but I’m ready to call this upcoming release a red-sneakered step in the right direction (and hopefully the Genesis of a new, tastier era for movie cereals).
Interestingly, this isn’t Sonic’s first foray into the breakfast aisle. From appearing on Honey Nut Cheerios boxes alongside Buzz the Bee to getting a FunkOs variant, an odd Golden Rings promo seemingly sent only to journalists, and…whatever this one is, Sonic is well travelled at the breakfast table, but this is his first time headlining a mainstream supermarket cereal.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theaters this April 8th, while Sonic the Hedgehog Cereal will hit stores in March.
Has anyone been able to find this? Haven’t spotted it at any stores thus far
I haven’t seen it anywhere either in the NJ/NY area in my travels and we’re already near the end of March. I don’t mean to bad mouth this website since I enjoy it a lot, but there have been a few articles published for interesting new cereals that were supposed to be released in the past years that I never found anywhere. I sometimes question how real these new cereal articles really are. Not saying NJ and NY are the hub of America, but I’d certainly think we’d get most of the new cereal releases in our market area of the country and I never found this one, or tropical fruity pebbles, and a few other supposed releases and I frequent the stores that tend to carry new cereals. Why would a large cereal brand like General Mills, Post, or Kellogg’s take the time and money to create a new cereal and to market it but never release it? Seems like a waste of effort.
I understand and share your frustration, but I assure you I only share release dates when they’ve come directly from the cereal company or are posted by a credible source. Otherwise, I try to make it clear when something is just a rumor or early leak that isn’t necessarily confirmed. This March release window for Sonic Cereal, for instance, was stated by a General Mills PR rep, so it’s not my fault if their plans changed without telling me.
Any further information about which stores this will be available in? Or even if it will be available in Canada? I miss out on so many of the gooduns
I’m one of the OG Sonic fans from the 90s and I’ve been waiting literal decades for this, but I am totally not convinced by that blue “spin” marshmallow.
I couldn’t agree with your post more. This cereal actually sounds new and exciting and not some rehash of a previous tie-in cereal for a movie or cartoon. I’m actually excited for the first time in a long time for a new cereal to hit the shelves. Hopefully, most people can actually find it in their local stores and it’s not some regional release.
