Well, looks like it’s time to renew my monthly subscription to HBO. And no, I’m not talking about getting my Game of Thrones fix—I mean Honey Bunches of Oats! With two new episodes in cereal squire Gabe Fonseca’s Cereal Time YouTube series, we wanted to share both with you. Cereal Time takes an in-depth look at a different cereal lineage each week, and it’s chock full of vitamins, minerals, and occasionally King Vitaman.
Honey Bunches of Oats takes the honey-soaked stage first. As Gabe describes, Honey Bunches of Oats have humble beginnings, ever since 1986 when good ol’ Vernon Herzing first mixed 4 different Post cereals into a single Frankenstein’s cereal monster (not to be confused with Franken Berry, of course). Honey Bunches first started as “Battle Creek Cereal,” and even though I’m a Michigan native and would have loved for that name to catch on, it was the much more literal “Honey Bunches of Oats” that finally stuck (both literally and metaphorically: honey is sticky!).
Maybe “Battle Creek Cereal” sounds too much like a cereal killer horror movie.
While Gabe isn’t that big of a Honey Bunches fan, I certainly am. As for favorite flavors, regular readers know I have a soft spot—or at least a crunchy spot—for Chocolate Honey Bunches of Oats. But with so many flavors of bunches to choose from, you really can’t go wrong. Unless, of course, you accidentally eat the box instead.
Speaking of literal cereal names, next up is Honey Smacks (formerly known as Sugar Smacks), which likes to smack you across the face with puffed wheat bursting with sugary honey taste.
Even though Honey Smacks is just a blatant copycat of Post’s Golden Crisp (which is, itself, a copycat of Ranger Joe’s Wheat Honnies. I wonder if Ranger Joe knows Trader Joe?), Honey Smacks has had a much more diverse ancestry of mascots over the years, from Smacksy the seal to Dig ‘Em the frog.
While it can be hard to tell Honey Smacks and Golden Crisp apart, I like to imagine a post-apocalyptic cereal civil war occurring, wherein a cyberpunk Sugar bear and Dig ‘Em battle it out over the ruins of New Battle Creek to see who will become the Puffed Wheat Emperor of the scorched sugar dystopia.
I may have eaten too many Honey Smacks before writing this.
Gabe has a lot more Cereal Time videos out there, so if you really dig ’em, every episode can be found here, and you can check out Gabe’s Twitter, as well.
Is it weird, that i normaly LOVE honey cereal but never got warm with smacks? Though it’s overly sweet and full of sugar i never really liked it as kid. ^^
Interesting though how many times kelloggs changed smacks – name-wise and mascot-wise. Wasn’t aware of that; the frog was the only one i really know ^^
Ok… i really need to try HBO… i know i said it before and also had some ideas to recreate it with cereals we have in germany, but since you can’t stop raving ab out HBO i’m already addicted to it without ever trying it xD
