Do you need a smile or an ice cream cone to get you through today’s dreaded series of 24 grueling hours (a.k.a. Monday)? Well all of my fellow human Garfields out there need not despair, because thanks to the latest two videos in cereal MVP Gabe Fonseca’s YouTube series, you can see a whole bowl full of ’em!
Cereal Time is a video series dedicated to highlighting a different classic, new, or retro cereal each week. For a series that has given me countless chuckles and snickers, it seems appropriate that the first video we’d like to share with you is all about Grins & Smiles & Giggles & Laughs cereal.
Named after its four cartoon mascots who try to make Cecil the Robot laugh and produce the cereal itself, G&S&G&L cereal is full of sweetened, crunchy smiley face-shaped pieces. Believe it or not, this cereal is just one of several creepy/happy face cereals; among its brethren are Kaboom, Morning Funnies, Cabbage Patch Kids, and the Canada-only version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cereal.
Jeez, between these, Smiley Fries, and Giggles cookies, there have been enough face-shaped foods out there to feed Hannibal Lecter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
After all those ampersands, it’s a relief that Gabe’s video covers a much more simply named cereal. Ice Cream Cones cereal’s name pretty much says it all: the original ’80s cereal contained chocolate, Bugle-shaped cone pieces and corn puffs in either vanilla or chocolate chip flavor.
While I never got to experience this cereal, it sounds like Saturday morning bliss—exactly the kind of cereal that I would chase down a truck playing catchy jingles for. Regardless of the stranger danger, Ice Cream Cones cereal would be worth it. With the recent return of Kellogg’s Smorz, Ice Cream Cones seems like the perfect cereal for General Mills to fire back with.
And speaking of revivals, Gabe shows in the video how General Mills did briefly bring Ice Cream Cones back in the early 2000s. This version, sadly, replaced the 3D Bugles with what look, essentially, like chocolate Doritos. So if GM ever brings back Ice Cream Cones, let’s all hope (for the sake of Ice Cream Jones’ cherished mascot legacy) that the Bugles do, too.
Wow. I never thought I’d discuss the idea of “chocolate Doritos” in a negative context. C’mon, Frito-Lay: make my inevitably gross dream a reality!
If Gabe’s videos have you grinning (and smiling, giggling, and laughing), every Cereal Time video can be found here, and you can check out Gabe’s Twitter, as well.
so much typos… -.-
“searched the internet for […]”
“to provide YOU with some cranchito!!!”
-.-
Gabe mentioned those ice cream cones before in one of his videos or i read it in a comment and was hooked immediately… i mean i search the internet for information about the cereal for a whole hour afterwards xD
I would sooooo love to try them! Though it will still be hard to get them i’m crossing my fingers they relaunch them!
btw Dan, you don’t have to beg Frito-Lay to do something “gross”. Just ask Milka to provide with some Cranchito!!!
So yeah… a corn chip covered in chocolate is already a real thing in germany, and let me tell you: As good as pretzel and chocolate and a lot of salty and chocolately combinations work perfectly well as flavor, the cranchitos do well too. ^^
