Review: Buffalo Wild Wings & Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries Blender!

Cap'n Crunch Buffalo Wild Wings Crunch Berries Blenders Review Cereal Shake

We already know that human sports exist within the cereal world: Wheaties is practically an in-universe ESPN, Tony the Tiger coaches little league, and Cap’n Crunch has played in so many games that a human man of his age would have retired with soggy joints years ago.

But this past year or so of cereal–restaurant tie-ins suggests that our beloved cereal mascots, many of whom are older than us, have turned to a new form of friendly competition—one that avoids lost teeth and crunched bones. The bowling of the cereal world, this is a sport ironically played in a cup:

Milkshake Mixology!

Yes, Buffalo Wild Wings & Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries Blender is, by my count, the ninth major cereal milkshake to debut in recent memory. And while the Cap’n may be wearing palate guards now, my slightly lactose-intolerant stomach has tried them all.

But will B-Dubs and C-Crunch’s drinkable dessert be an ace serve against Burger King’s incredible shake trio? Or will it post up next to Steak ‘n’ Shake’s milquetoast quintology of bench-warming waterboys?

There’s only one way to find out, and it involves going somewhere I never go without the supervision of an overbearingly athletic family member who will doubtlessly inquire deeply about my collective one year of Kindergarten soccer experience.

(I almost got kicked off the team for trying to tickle other kids too much. True story.)

This gorgeously abstract work of cereal art looks as picturesque as its promotional photos, with its dense rainbow pointillism and berry-on-top finish—even if my Buffalo Wild Wings Crunch Berries Blender differed slightly from its published recipe.

See, this glass of slurpable cereal beverage calls for just ice cream, ice, whipped cream, and cereal mix, but our b-dubs-arista later told us she added Sprite to make up for the difference in standard Blender volume usually reserved for alcohol—which isn’t standard for this shake, but is apparently a totally valid mix-in option for those aged XXI and up.

After all, what Cap’n doesn’t enjoy some Berry-aged bourbon on the rocks?

Not that you really need it, because this is a great drink, even with Sprite instead of spirits. The signature, nostalgically oiled and tropical flavor of Crunch Berries cereal mixes seamlessly with the Blender’s vanilla ice cream to create a lively, semisolid personification of real cereal endmilk, complete with ambiguous blueberry and candied cherry undertones. The cereal pieces, which I saw my shakesmith pour out from a large carton filled with the technicolor gold, give the shake a more 3-dimensional mouthfeel with its pops of crispness. Shaken together, the drink takes the atomically sugared potency of Cap’n Crunch cereal—the kind that eventually becomes sinfully delicious for adult stomachs—but dilutes it with the grounding fattiness and comforting vanilla warmth of quality ice cream.

The one standout problem with BWW’s cereal Blender isn’t the Cap’n or the Berries: it’s the Crunch. There were a lot of crunchy ice crystals lurking in my Blender’s merry murk, and while ice in its own right is essential for milkshake success, its glacial flood makes the Cap’n Crunch Blender a bit too thin and watered-down at times, especially at the drink’s beginning, before you reach the drink’s back nine of half-melted ice cream nirvana. Because of this, the shake at times reminded me of the texture of 7-Eleven’s own superb Crunch Berries Slurpee, which beats this Blender in concentrated Crunch Berry authenticity, but lacks milky balance in comparison.

Cap'n Crunch Buffalo Wild Wings Crunch Berries Blenders Review Cereal Shake Collectible Spoon

And hey: it comes with a color-changing collectible spoon/King Arthur-worthy action figure weapon!

So as it stands, Buffalo Wild Wings & Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries Blender, which is giving me knuckle biceps after typing that name so many times, falls right between Steak ‘n’ Shake and Burger King in the pantheon of cereal shake divinity. With a little bit of vodka—if not Kahlua—I think the more hollow downsides of this otherwise delightful puréed Saturday Morning could be satisfactorily filled with the grown-up equivalent of childlike whimsy.

After all, both are intoxicating in their own way. Booze-a-tize me, Cap’n!

The Bowl: Buffalo Wild Wings & Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries Blender

The Breakdown: A fun, liquefied homage to Crunch Berries and milk, this drink may occasionally lack flavor density, but it makes up for it with transportive fake-fruitiness, mixer potential, and a doubly buttered Cap’n ‘n’ cream combo.

The Bottom Line: 8.5 barnacled grogs on tap out of 10
